No. 15 Illinois 77, Rutgers 55
SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas (AP)—James Augustine was quick to praise his teammates after Illinois’ latest win.
Augustine scored 18 points and Brian Randle added 16, leading No. 15 Illinois to a 77-57 victory over Rutgers in the championship game of the South Padre Island Invitational on Saturday night.
Augustine, the tournament MVP, was 7-of-9 from the field and had seven rebounds. Rich McBride scored 11 points and Dee Brown added 10 for Illinois (5-0).
Shaun Pruitt, who had six points, was the only Illinois starter who didn’t score in double figures. Illinois got just 16 points from its bench, but Augustine said reserves still played a key role.
“We’re making progress each and every game, and I think that’s what counts,” Augustine said. “I think the bench did a great job today and carried us the whole time. It means a lot to know that your bench can go out there and do the same thing that you do.”
Quincy Douby led Rutgers (3-1) with 21 points, and Anthony Farmer had 12.
Illinois shot 51 percent from the field, including 65 percent in the second half. Rutgers shot 26 percent in the first half and finished at 39 percent.
Illinois coach Bruce Weber said he made his team watch film of Friday’s 55-54 victory over Wichita State, in which the Illini needed Warren Carter’s layup with 1.3 seconds remaining to win the game.
Weber said the film session helped his team not make the same mistakes two games in a row.
“I think (watching film of themselves) helped them,” Weber said. “I think they realized they weren’t using screens, even coming off a tight ball screen, they weren’t putting the guy in a bind.”
Illinois, which trailed only once early in the game, led by as many as 23 points after having a 38-26 lead at the break.
