Bucknell 87, Yale 60
LEWISBURG, Pa. (AP)—Kevin Bettencourt scored 17 points and Chris McNaughton added 15 on 7-for-7 shooting as Bucknell beat Yale 87-60 Saturday.
The Bison (3-0), one of the favorites in the Patriot League, shot 67.9 percent in the opening half in taking a 47-32 halftime lead and holding the Bulldogs (2-2) to just nine baskets.
Showing no signs of a letdown following its 74-69 upset victory over Syracuse, Bucknell exhibited great balance in the first half as McNaughton, Bettencourt and Charles Lee all scored 10 points while the Bison defense pressured the visitors into turning the ball over 10 times.
In the second half, Bucknell widened its advantage to 66-46 as John Griffin hit back-to-back three-pointers and Bettencourt collected the Bison’s first four-point play with his fourth trey of the contest with 10:45 remaining in the game. Darren Mastropaolo gave the Bison their biggest lead of the game, 80-48, on a pair of free throws.
Yale managed to get within 16 points when Caleb Holmes hit a 3-pointer to cut the Bucknell lead down to 62-46.
