Towson 60, UMBC 55
TOWSON, Md. (AP)—Lawrence Hamm scored 16 points and Towson ended a 14-game losing streak by beating Maryland-Baltimore County 60-55 Tuesday night.
Dennard Abraham had 13 points and 10 rebounds for Towson (1-1), which hadn’t won since beating James Madison at home on Jan. 19. The Tigers halted a nine-game losing streak to UMBC.
Jerrell Dinkens’ career-high 13 points led the Retrievers (1-2).
UMBC, playing its third game in five nights, had trouble handling Towson’s floating 2-3 zone and finished 20-for-61 from the field. UMBC was 8-for-15 from the free throw line.
After scoring on only two shots from the field in the final 8:08 of the first half, the Retrievers went almost eight minutes without connecting on a field goal attempt midway through the second half.
Towson exploited the latter dry spell. After Chris Pugh scored on a pull-up jumper with 17:16 remaining to get UMBC within 32-31, a bank shot by Marc Pratt jump-started a 15-6 run that put the Tigers up 47-36 with 9:30 left in the game.
Abraham converted a pair of hook shots in the paint and Sean Raboin contributed five points during the outburst.
UMBC got as close at 59-55 on a right-side 3-pointer by Rashad Bilal with 12 seconds remaining.
The teams traded first-half runs, with Towson’s 13-4 burst to close the half producing a 32-27 lead at intermission.
Midway through the half, the Retrievers used three consecutive 3-pointers by Jay Greene as part of a 16-5 spree that erased a 10-4 Tigers lead.
