Rutgers 49, Delaware State 42
PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP)—J.R. Inman scored 21 points and Rutgers withstood a determined effort by visiting Delaware State to record a 49-42 second-round win in the South Padre Island Invitational on Tuesday night.
The freshman center, who had been a non-factor in the Scarlet Knights’ first-round win against Austin Peay on Sunday, blocked shots, rebounded and scored to help Rutgers to a 2-0 record.
The Hornets took a 29-28 lead on Aaron Fleetwood’s 3-pointer with 15:37 remaining, but then Inman began to take charge.
His block on Tracey Worley during Delaware State’s next possession sparked the Knights. The 6-foot-9, 220-pounder snuffed four shots and snared seven rebounds in 37 minutes.
The Knights had led 26-23 after the first half courtesy of an Inman 3-pointer with 1:43 left and a 6-0 run fueled by Quincy Douby.
The junior guard had a pair of steals, a rebound, an assist and a pull-up basket just before the buzzer. He finished with 10 points.
Delaware State (1-2) was helped in the first by an 11-0 run thanks in part to 6 points from Joe Dickens.
Worley led Delaware State with 9.
Both teams travel to Texas for third-round games Friday at the South Padre Island Convention Center. The Knights face Kent State while Delaware State takes on Austin Peay. Rutgers is on track to play in the championship game of the eight-team event, which would be held Saturday night.
