NATCHITOCHES, La. (AP)—Kerwin Forges scored 17 points—and hit a pair of free throws in overtime—as Northwestern State defeated Nicholls State 95-93 Thursday.
Forges scored his final four points in overtime for the Demons (13-11, 7-3 Southland), who overcame a 14-point first-half deficit and an eight-point hole in the second half.
Forges hit a pair of free throws with 3:16 left in overtime to put Northwestern up 87-86. That started a run of six straight points which gave the Demons a 91-86 lead with 1:35 to go. Nicholls didn’t have a chance to take the lead until the final second, when Willie Depron’s court-length heave missed the basket.
But Depron’s shooting kept the Colonels (6-16, 1-10) in front most of the game. He scored a career-high 32 points, hitting 5-of-7 3-pointers and adding 9-of-11 from the free throw line while recording a game-best 10 rebounds.
Forges was one of six double-figure scorers for Northwestern. Clifton Lee scored 15, Byron Allen 13 and Jermaine Wallace 12. Tramaine Hancock and Alfonse Dyer each had 10.
Jason Wilkins added 15 points for Nicholls. Shawn King finished with 14 and Cyril Djoukeng had 11.
The Colonels led 81-77 with 52 seconds to go in regulation, but a 3-pointer from Tyronn Mitchell with 35 seconds remaining put them within one. Djoukeng hit the second of two free throws with 21 seconds to go, but Wallace was fouled nine seconds later and sank both free throws to force overtime.
