Holy Cross 68, Navy 66
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP)—Keith Simmons came off the bench to score 22 points as Holy Cross edged Navy 68-66 Friday.
Simmons scored 14 points in the second half and Pat Doherty hit back-to-back three-pointers to give the Crusaders a 67-58 lead with 2:08 to play, but they barely held on to avoid an upset by the Midshipmen (6-15, 2-6).
The Crusaders (16-5, 7-1) missed five of six free throws over the final two minutes as Navy countered with an 8-1 run. A basket, then two free throws by Corey Johnson closed Navy to 68-66 with eight seconds left.
After a steal, Navy’s David Rhoiney missed a shot with four seconds to play. Holy Cross rebounded, but the Crusaders’ John Hurley missed two free throws with six-tenths of a second left.
Navy’s full-court shot at the buzzer was wide.
Johnson led Navy with 17 points and eight rebounds. Greg Sprink added 14 points and was 4 of 6 on three-pointers as Navy shot a season-best 7 of 12 from beyond the arc.
Hurley added 13 points and led the Crusaders with nine rebounds.
