Kent St. 70, Marshall 63
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP)—Jay Youngblood scored a career-high 19 points to lead Kent State to a 70-63 win over Marshall on Tuesday night.
Kent State (14-7, 6-4 Mid-American Conference) also received 15 points from Armon Gates and 10 from DeAndre Haynes.
The win marked Kent State’s first MAC road win since a 76-61 victory over Central Michigan on Feb. 7, 2004.
Marshall (3-15, 0-9) got 13 points from Tre Whitted and 12 from A.W. Hamilton.
The game marked the second straight contest in which Marshall led at halftime, but lost in the end.
Marshall went without a field goal for more than six minutes down the stretch until Whitted hit a jumper with 3:08 left in the game.
On the play, Youngblood fouled out as he hit Whitted in the air. Kent’s Nate Gerwig got a couple of key offensive rebounds and a block on a Joe Miles lay-up attempt that would have cut the lead to three late in the contest.
Miles hit a 3-pointer to put Marshall up 55-46 with 9:07 left, but Marshall was outscored 24-8 the rest of the way, hitting only two field goals in that span.<
