FAIRFAX, Va. (AP)— Lamar Butler scored a career-high 28 points and hit seven 3-pointers to lead George Mason to a 79-61 win over Towson Wednesday night.

The Patriots (3-1, 1-0 Colonial Athletic Association) started to put Towson (2-4, 0-1) away early in the second half when Butler started a barrage of George Mason 3-pointers. Butler hit three 3-pointers during a 16-6 run and John Vaughan hit two more to push the lead to 52-35 with 14:53 to play.

Butler finished 7-of-12 from 3-point range and the Patriots hit 14 total, including 9 for 11 from long range in the second half.

Tony Skinn added 12 for the Patriots, who didn’t make a two-pointer in the second half until Jesus Urbina’s jumper with 9:44 left.

Mike Green scored 23 to lead the Tigers, who got just two points from their bench. Lawrence Hamm scored 13 and Cantrell Fletcher had 11 for Towson, which is now 0-7 in league play against the Patriots since joining the CAA at the start of the 2001-02 season.

Each team shot the ball well in stretches in the first half. Butler’s third 3-pointer 5:11 from half-time put the Patriots ahead by 16. However, Towson rallied to cut it to 36-27 at half-time, a comeback aided by the second foul called on George Mason center Jai Lewis that sent him to the bench.

Lewis, who came into the game averaging 17 points per game, finished with just six.
