HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP)—A.W. Hamilton led five Marshall scorers in double-figures with 16 points to lead the Thundering Herd past East Tennessee State 80-76 Tuesday night.

East Tennessee State (1-1), the two-time defending Southern Conference champions, entered the game ranked 38th in The Associated Press poll. Junior point guard Tim Smith led the Buccaneers with a career-high 35 points.

A 3-point halftime lead by Marshall (1-1) quickly turned into a 59-40 double-digit advantage as the Thundering Herd outscored the Buccaneers 24-5 over a seven minute span in which Hamilton scored 10 points

Tuesday’s meeting was the first between the schools since Marshall left the Southern Conference in 1997 for the Mid-American Conference.

Marshall hosts Oregon Saturday at the Charleston Civic Center, while East Tennessee State entertains Fresno State the same day.<
