Vanderbilt 73, Toledo 57
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP)—Mario Moore scored 12 of his 15 points in the second half and Vanderbilt won its 14th consecutive home-opener with a 73-57 win over Toledo in the season-opener for both teams.
Dawid Przybyszewski scored 15 points and grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds, and Julian Terrell added nine rebounds as Vanderbilt controlled the boards 49-34 against the visitors from the Mid-American Conference.
The Commodores, playing in their first game since all-time leading scorer Matt Freije graduated, put forth a balanced effort on offense with six players scoring at least eight points. Senior Jason Holwerda scored 10.
Florentino Valencia scored 18 for Toledo, which is picked to finish first in the MAC West with five returning starters from last years 20-11 team. Sammy Villegas scored 14 and preseason MAC Player of the Year Keith Triplett added 10.
Vanderbilts defense was strong throughout as the Commodores held Toledo to 34 percent shooting, blocking nine shots. They also forced 15 Toledo turnovers.
Vanderbilt looked to have the game in hand, building 17-point leads early in the second half on three different occasions, but Toledo hung around, closing to 47-37 with 10 minutes to play.
Przybyszewskis three-pointer with 3:33 remaining gave Vanderbilt a 65-47 lead and put the game firmly in Vanderbilts control.
