Louisiana Tech 57, San Jose State 51

FRESNO, Calif. (AP)—Paul Millsap had 16 points and 18 rebounds, and Louisiana Tech held off San Jose State 57-51 Tuesday night in the opening round of the Western Athletic Conference tournament.

Donell Allick added 18 points and five steals for the seventh-seeded Bulldogs (15-14), who advanced to the quarterfinals to play No. 2 seed Texas El-Paso on Thursday.

Marquin Chandler made five 3-pointers and led the Spartans (6-23) with 21 points.

San Jose State made six 3-pointers in the second half to erase a 14-point deficit and tie the game at 49 with 1:33 left in the game.

But Louisiana Tech scored the next eight points to put the game away.

The Bulldogs used an 8-0 spurt to take a 25-22 halftime lead and took control with a 13-2 run to open the second half.

Eric Walton, the Spartans leading scorer, fouled out with 14:44 left in the game. Chandler picked up the slack by hitting three 3-pointers over a six-minute stretch, the third cutting the Louisiana Tech lead to 40-36 with 6:39 left.

After Louisiana Tech stretched the lead back to nine, Chandler, Bim Okunrinboye and Phil Calvert all hit 3-pointers to tie the game at 49 with 1:33 left.

But Corey Dean, Millsap and Allick combined to score the games next eight points, six coming on free throws, to seal the win.
