HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP)—Marvin Black had 16 points and 14 rebounds to lead No. 8 Marshall to a 78-59 win over No. 9 Eastern Michigan in the first round of the Mid-American Conference tournament Monday night.
Marshall (12-16) will play No. 1 Western Michigan (23-4) in the quarterfinals Thursday night in Cleveland.
Marshall hasn’t won a quarterfinal game since 2000.
A.W. Hamilton also scored 16 points for Marshall.
JaQuan Hart led Eastern Michigan with 19 points. John Bowler had 14 points and 11 rebounds.
Eastern Michigan (13-15) has failed to reach the quarterfinals in six straight seasons after advancing to the MAC title game in the four years before that.
Marshall shot nearly 63 percent from the field in the first half. It scored eight straight points spanning both halves for a 50-33 lead with 18:12 left.
But the Thundering Herd made just one field goal over the next nine minutes. Eastern’s James Jackson hit three baskets in three minutes to cut the deficit to 55-46 midway through the second half.
The Eagles got no closer.
Eastern Michigan made just 4-of-14 free throws in losing to Marshall for the second time this season.<
