Siena 66, Fairfield 63
ALBANY, N.Y. (AP)—Tommy Mitchell scored 19 points and went 4-4 from the free throw line in the game’s final five seconds as Siena scored the first upset of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament, knocking off No. 3 Fairfield 66-63 in a second round game Saturday night.
Justin Miller’s field goal with 3:01 remaining broke a 54-54 tie and gave Siena (14-15, 11-9 MAAC) the lead for good. A free throw by Mitchell followed by an Antoine Jordan field goal with 1:29 to play put the Saints ahead 59-54.
Fairfield (19-11, 12-7 MAAC) battled back on the strength of seven points in less than 15 seconds by Michael Bell, whose field goal made it 64-63 with 2.6 seconds left.
After Mitchell hit a pair of free throws, Fairfield trailed by three with 1.8 seconds remaining. Alvin Carter’s inbounds pass was deflected right to Bell for an uncontested 3-pointer that hit the backboard and rolled off the rim as the buzzer sounded.
Jordan and Michael Haddix each had 10 points for Siena.
Rob Thomson led Fairfield with 18 points. DeWitt Maxwell scored 16 and Bell had 15.
No. 6 Siena advances to the semifinals for the third-straight year to face No. 2 Niagara Sunday.
