Murray St. 94, Morehead St. 72
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP)—Chris Shumate led five players in double figures with 15 points and Murray State advanced to the finals of the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament with a 94-72 victory over Morehead State on Friday night.
No. 2 seed Murray State (27-5, 14-2) will face top-seeded Austin Peay in the championship game on Saturday.
OVC Player of the Year Cuthbert Victor had 14 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists for Murray State. Antione Whelchel scored 14 points, Kelvin Brown had 13 and Shawn Witherspoon added 12 for the Racers, who have won seven straight.
Murray State took control right off the bat, breaking out to a 16-2 lead. Morehead State fought back, and was within 68-59 with 7:17 to play, but a 15-4 run by the Racers sealed the victory.
Ricky Minard led third-seeded Morehead State (16-13, 10-6) with 24 points and 8 rebounds after nearly getting ejected with 7:58 to play in the first half.
Minard, who already had a technical foul earlier in the game, was whistled for another after accidentally knocking over another player after a foul call.
The officials huddled, then waived the technical off. Minard, the OVC’s leading scorer at 21.7 points per game, was later ejected after getting his second technical foul with 1:17 to play.
Ramon Kelly had 20 points for Morehead.
Murray State shot 57 percent from the floor.
Murray State has now reached 14 of the last 17 OVC Tournament championship games.
