HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP)—Marvin Black scored 15 of his 23 points in the second half Wednesday to lead Marshall to a 78-68 win over Akron.
The Zips (13-13, 7-10 Mid-American Conference) extended their two-point halftime lead to 45-38 with 17:50 to play before Marshall reeled off 10 consecutive points to go ahead 48-45.
Marshall (11-15, 8-9) finished off a 20-4 run with 8:33 to play to take its first double-digit lead at 60-49. Eight different Thundering Herd players scored during the run that spanned nine minutes.
Akron would get within 69-63 with 3:00 to play before Marshall finished Akron off.
Derrick Tarver scored a game-high 39 points for the Zips, including 19 in the first half that gave Akron a 36-34 lead going into the break.
David Anderson scored 13 points for Marshall, while teammates Enoch Bunch and A.W. Hamilton added 11 and 10, respectively.
Marshall out-rebounded the Zips, 38-28, with Black’s nine boards leading the way.<
