Valparaiso 70, UMKC 60
VALPARAISO, Ind. (AP)—Dan Oppland scored 19 points and Valparaiso led throughout as the Crusaders beat Missouri-Kansas City 70-60 Saturday.
Joaquim Gomes had 17 and Jimmie Miles 13 for Valparaiso (13-10, 10-4 Mid-Con Conference).
The Crusaders outshot the Kangaroos (12-11, 7-5 Mid-Con) throughout, shooting 50 percent in the first half compared with UMKC’s 34.6 percent. Overall, Valparaiso made 23 of 53 field goals while the Kangaroos made only 21 of 56.
The Crusaders were 7 of 18 from the three-point line while the Kangaroos made only 4 of 23.
Both teams shone on free throws as the Kangaroos shot 70 percent while Valparaiso was 85 percent from the line.
Valparaiso led 36-22 at halftime and never trailed.
Michael Watson led the Kangaroos with 20 points. Brandon Lipsey had 12 and Mike English had 11 for UMKC.
