SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP)—Bryan Hopkins scored 18 points and Southern Methodist broke away in the second half of a 62-55 victory over freefalling San Jose State on Thursday night.

Patrick Simpson scored 16 points for the Mustangs (10-12, 4-8), who made a 16-2 run midway through the second half after the Spartans tied the game with 12:25 to play. Kris Lowe added 14 points and six rebounds for SMU.

Eric Walton scored 16 points and Marquin Chandler had 15 points and 10 rebounds for San Jose State (5-16, 0-11), which lost its 13th straight and remained winless in Western Athletic Conference play. The Spartans went 6:39 without a point during SMU’s decisive rally.

SMU also had an advantage at the foul line, making 16 of 25 shots to San Jose State’s 9-for-12.
