S. Illinois 61, Creighton 60
OMAHA, Neb. (AP)—Darren Brooks scored 16 points and Southern Illinois broke Creighton’s school-record 28-game home winning streak Saturday with a 61-60 victory in a meeting of the Missouri Valley Conference’s top two teams.
The first-place Salukis (18-2, 12-0 MVC) opened a three-game lead over the Bluejays (17-3, 9-3) with six games left.
Brooks’ made 1-of-2 free throws with 39.2 seconds to play to give Southern Illinois a 61-57 lead.
But Tony Young fouled Creighton’s Johnny Mathies as he was attempting a 3-pointer. Mathies made the three free throws to narrow the Salukis’ lead to 61-60 with 25.1 seconds left.
Mathies intentionally fouled Brooks on SIU’s ensuing possession. Brooks missed the free throw, and Creighton’s Brody Deren rebounded to give his team a chance to take the lead with under 10 seconds left. Deren passed to Mathies, who lost control of the ball as he was being guarded by Bryan Turner.
The Bluejays regained possession and called time out with 1.5 seconds to play.
Michael Lindeman’s inbounds pass went through Nate Funk’s hands along the baseline, and SIU was able to run out the clock.
Brooks added eight rebounds and six assists.
Mathies and Deren each scored 13 points and Mike Grimes added 12 for Creighton. Deren also had seven rebounds.
The game was tied nine times and there were 15 lead changes.
Saturday’s loss was Creighton’s first at the Qwest Center, which opened this season, and the Bluejays’ first at home since Drake beat them on Feb. 25, 2002.
