CARBONDALE, Ill. (AP)—Darren Brooks scored 14 points and reserve LaMar Owen had 12 points and seven rebounds for Southern Illinois in a 53-44 win over Indiana State on Sunday.
Brooks was 6-of-13 from the field and surpassed the 1,000-point mark for his career at Southern Illinois (14-2, 8-0 Missouri Valley) , which set a school record for its best start in conference play.
The Salukis trailed by three when Owen sparked a 16-3 run to give Southern Illinois a 43-33 lead. Owen hit four straight free throws during the spurt and Brooks made a 3-pointer as the Salukis would eventually extend their lead to 14.
David Moss led Indiana State (8-8, 4-4) with 12 points. Amani Daanish had seven points and nine rebounds.
