Morehead St. 89, Jacksonville St. 81
JACKSONVILLE, Ala. (AP)—Chez Marks scored 27 points on 10-of-14 shooting and Morehead State went to the free-throw line 22 more times than Jacksonville State in an 89-81 win Saturday night.
Craig Lewis scored 24 points, Ricky Minard had 21 and Chad McKnight added 14 for the Eagles (9-8, 4-2 Ohio Valley Conference).
The starters had all but two points, and two players came off the bench to play only 21 minutes.
Trent Eager scored 22 points to lead the Gamecocks (9-9, 2-5). Scott Watson added 14, and Walker Russell had 13 points and a career-high nine assists.
The Eagles took a 73-57 lead, their largest of the second half, on a baseline jumper by McKnight with 11:29 left in the game.
The Gamecocks responded with a 22-6 run, tying the game at 79-79 on Russell’s layup with 3:41 to play, but Morehead State scored 10 of the game’s final 12 points.
The Eagles made 23 of 28 free throws, while Jacksonville State went only 5-of-6 from the line. Morehead State also held a 38-24 edge on the boards.
