MURRAY, Ky. (AP)—Adam Chiles had 21 points to lead four Murray State players in double figures as the Racers defeated Jacksonville State 89-84 Saturday night.
Trailing 59-60 with 10:17 to play in the second half, Antione Whelchel hit two from the free-throw line to put Murray State (13-3, 3-1 Ohio Valley Conference) up 61-60.
From there, Murray State went on a 10-0 run and was up by as many as 12 with 4:58 to play when Chris Shumate dunked to put the Racers up 81-69.
Several turnovers and missed shots by Murray State gave Jacksonville State (7-8, 1-4) an opportunity to close the gap as Scott Watson and James Denson each had a 3-pointer.
But the Racers landed four free throws in the last 1:27 and held on for the five-point win.
Kelvin Brown scored 17 for Murray State. Kevin Paschel had 12, and Whelchel scored 11, while grabbing a team-high 11 rebounds. Rick Jones added 10.
For the Gamecocks, Watson had the game-high 22 points. James Denson scored 19 points, and Josh Perry added 17.
