Fairfield 81, Iona 78
NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. (AP)—Deng Gai scored 19 points and Fairfield held off Iona 81-78 when Steve Burtt missed a 3-pointer in the final seconds Friday night.
Burtt finished with a game-high 22 points for Iona (5-10, 3-3 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) and helped the Gaels rally from a 76-69 deficit in the final minute.
Burtt fed Greg Jenkins for a layup that cut it to 79-75 with 15 seconds remaining. Terrence Todd then made two free throws for Fairfield (9-6, 2-2).
Burtt countered with a 3-pointer that made it 81-78 with 10 seconds to play. Todd then missed two foul shots a second later, giving Iona a chance.
But Burtt, working the left side, appeared to lose track of time. He did not set himself and let fly with an impossible shot with three seconds left that missed.
Todd Sogadzi scored 18 points, Kudjo Sogadzi added 17 and Tyquawn Goode had 12.
Steve Smith had 17 points and eight rebounds for Iona.
