KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP)—Michael Watson scored 21 points to lead University of Missouri-Kansas City over Western Illinois 85-50 in a Mid-Continent Conference game Thursday.
The victory was the fourth straight for the Kangaroos (8-7, 4-1). It was also UMKC’s fourth consecutive conference win after losing 91-71 against Oral Roberts to start the conference season. The 4-1 start is the Kangaroos’ best since the 1999-2000 season.
The Leathernecks (2-13, 0-4) lost for the fifth consecutive time with a season low 50 points.
The game was decided in the first half with UMKC leading 45-18 at half-time. UMKC outscored the Leathernecks 18-4 from the 10-minute mark to five-minutes left in the first half to turn a 17-5 lead into a 35-9 advantage.
The Leathernecks were 6-of-25 from the field for 24 percent and had 11 turnovers in the first 20 minutes. UMKC was 17-of-29 (59 percent) from the floor, and 6-of-11 (46 percent) behind the three-point line.
Watson was followed in scoring by Mike English and Carlton Aaron with 12 points each, and Brandon Lipsey and Javon Clark with 11 each. Aaron also claimed a game-high 10 rebounds.
UMKC was 30-of-55 from the floor (55 percent) for the game, while Western Illinois was just 19-of-50 for 38 percent.
The scoring leader for the Leathernecks was Bobby Carter with 15 points.
