Penn 71, La Salle 47
PHILADELPHIA (AP)—Tim Begley was 6-of-12 from 3-point range and scored a career-high 20 points as Penn defeated local rival La Salle 71-47 on Wednesday.
Mark Zoller had 14 points and 10 rebounds for Penn (7-5), while Steven Smith had 20 points and 15 rebounds for the Explorers (7-8), who were held to their lowest point total of the season. La Salle’s Gary Neal, who has averaged 21.7 points per game, made only 3 of 15 shots and had 12 points.
Leading 38-30 at halftime, the Quakers went on a 17-4 run to start the second half, then built a 57-34 lead on consecutive 3-pointers by Begley and Charlie Copp. La Salle trailed the rest of the way by at least 13.
Begley hit his first three shots of the game, all 3-pointers, as Penn jumped out to a 25-16 lead. The Explorers scored six straight points before the Quakers ended the rally with a 10-0 run, capped by another trey from Begley to make it 35-22.
Penn has won 11 of the last 13 games between the longtime rivals, and holds a 35-22 edge in the overall series. The Quakers out-rebounded La Salle 49 to 36.
