La Salle 66, Richmond 55
PHILADELPHIA (AP)—Gary Neal led all scorers with 21 points to keep the La Salle Explorers undefeated in conference play with a 66-55 win over the Richmond Spiders on Saturday.
The only other Explorer in double figures, Steven Smith scored 15 points and grabbed 11 rebounds—his third double-double of the season.
Daon Merritt led the Spiders with 17 points, and Mike Skrocki added 14.
La Salle (7-7, 2-0 Atlantic 10) was able to open up a 10-0 lead, as Richmond (8-7, 1-2) did not score for the first nine minutes of the game.
With both teams shooting under 30 percent, the Explorers took a 23-13 lead into the half. Despite a better shooting performance in the second half, Richmond was unable to chip into the La Salle lead as the Explorers held a double-digit advantage for nearly the entire frame.
Richmond was able to cut the lead under 10 three times in the half, the closest at 38-30 with 13:30 remaining.
The win marks the first time that La Salle has started 2-0 in Atlantic 10 play. The Explorers joined the conference in the 1995-96 season.
