Samford 58, Jacksonville State 48
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP)—Tyson Dorsey finished with 15 points and Eddie Harper added 14 to lead Samford to a 58-48 win over Ohio Valley Conference rival Jacksonville State on Tuesday night.
Phillip Ramelli scored 12 points and Robert Merritt had 10 for Samford (6-6, 1-0 OVC), which is 6-0 at home.
The Gamecocks (6-6, 0-2 OVC) led 17-15 at halftime, but Samford used a 19-6 run to open the second half, taking an 11-point lead midway.
Merritt’s two free throws with 11:27 left gave the Bulldogs a 34-23 advantage with 11:27 left, but the Gamecocks managed to cut the lead to four points with less than two minutes to go.
Trent Eager led the Gamecocks with a game-high 17 points. His 3-pointer with 1:57 left cut the deficit to 47-43, but Samford answered with Harper’s 3-pointer to push the lead back to seven—and JSU would get no closer.
Samford sank 8-of-10 free throws in the final minute of the game to seal the win.
The Bulldogs hit 21-of-28 free throws overall, while outrebounding the Gamecocks 27-22.
Walker Russell scored a career-high 16 points for Jacksonville State.
