Virginia 84, William & Mary 71
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP)—Virginia used a 15-2 run in the final minutes to pull away for a 84-71 victory over William & Mary on Monday night at University Hall.
Devin Smith had 22 points, eight assists and five rebounds for the for the Cavaliers (10-2). Elton Brown added 22 for Virginia.
William & Mary (4-7) was led by Adam Hess with 20 points.
The Cavaliers used a 14-2 run midway through the first half to break the game open. Virginia was twice able to push its lead to as much as 15 but wasn’t able to extend it further in the opening 20 minutes.
After trailing 48-37 at halftime, the Tribe cut the margin to 58-56 with 13:38 left after a 3-pointer by Nick D’Antoni.
The Cavaliers briefly pushed the lead back to eight, but the Tribe refused to be put away and made it 64-63 with 7:38 left on a pair of free throws by Zeb Cope.
