La Salle 71, Chattanooga 65
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP)—Gary Neal scored 30 points, including seven during a game-winning 9-0 run, and Steven Smith added 24 as La Salle defeated Chattanooga 71-65 Tuesday night to win the Dr Pepper Classic.
Chattanooga (7-5) led 65-62 with 2:07 to play, but La Salle (5-6) scored the final nine points of the game. Neal hit a 3-pointer to tie the game with 1:44 to play, added a basket after the Mocs missed a 3-point attempt, and had two of the Explorers’ four free throws the rest of the way.
Smith added 10 rebounds was named the tournament’s most valuable player.
The victory snapped Chattanooga’s three-year streak as Dr Pepper Classic champions.
The Mocs took their first lead of the game with 8:27 to play when Ashley Champion hit a layup for a 47-46 lead.
Chris Brown led Chattanooga with 17 points. Champion added 16 and Bryan Richardson had 15, all on 3-pointers.
