CARBONDALE, Ill. (AP)—Southern Illinois outshot and outrebounded Illinois State on their way to a 57-40 win on Sunday.
For the Salukis (8-1, 2-0 Missouri Valley Conference), the win was one for the record books. It was a team-best 31st straight win at home. And the Redbirds’ 40 points is the fewest number of points ever allowed by the Salukis to a Missouri Valley Conference opponent.
The Salukis shot 44 percent to the Redbirds’ 32 percent and won the rebounding battle 37-27. Only two players in the game scored in double digits, and Illinois State’s leading scorer—Najeeb Echols—had 9 points.
Southern Illinois led 22-18 at halftime.
Southern Illinois’ LaMar Owen led all scorers with 16 points and had eight rebounds. Darren Brooks added 12 points for Southern Illinois. Tony Young had 10 rebound to go with 9 points.
Marcus Arnold scored seven points and had four rebounds for Illinois State.
Neither team shot well from 3-point range, but Illinois State (4-5, 0-2 MVC) shot and missed many more. The Redbirds were 3-17 in 3-point attempts. The Salukis were 1-7.
