Virginia Commonwealth 55, La Salle 54
PHILADELPHIA (AP)—Domonic Jones had a game-high 16 points, leading the Virginia Commonwealth Rams to a 55-54 come-from-behind win over La Salle on Monday.
With both teams struggling early on, a VCU free throw tied the game at 14 at the 11:10 mark. La Salle (3-6) then tightened up on the defensive end, allowing the Rams (7-2) just one field goal over the next 7:02 to open up a 28-17 lead.
VCU would chip into the lead and trailed by only seven points at the break.
Behind by eight early in the second half, the Rams went on a 10-0 run to take a 45-43 lead at the midway point.
The two teams would trade leads the rest of the way, with VCU taking a 55-54 lead on a Jesse Pellot-Rosa put-back with 6.4 seconds left.
La Salle had a chance to win the game, but Mike Cleaves dribbled the ball off his foot as time expired giving the Rams the victory.
Michael Doles was the only other VCU player in double figures with 13. Gary Neal and Steven Smith lead the Explorers with 14. David Bell had 11.
