UC Santa Barbara 63, Alabama St. 53
RENO, Nev. (AP)—Branduinn Fullove scored 23 points and Nick Jones added 12 off the bench to lead UC Santa Barbara to a 63-53 win over Alabama State on Sunday night at the Wolf Pack Holiday Classic.
Casey Cook had eight points and six rebounds for the Gauchos (6-3), who used a 16-4 run midway through the second half to take command of a seesaw game.
Malcolm Campbell scored 15 points and Jermaine Smith and Akeim Claborn scored 11 each for Alabama State (2-6).
Fullove scored Santa Barbara’s first 12 points, including a pair of 3-point jumpers, for a 12-4 lead 5 minutes into the game.
Alabama State answered with a 17-7 run to go ahead 21-19 on Claborn’s 3-pointer 6 minutes before the half, but Joe See followed with a 3-pointer and Josh Davis made consecutive baskets to help put Santa Barbara ahead 28-26 at halftime.
After Campbell hit a three-pointer, Kevin Spicer scored inside to put Alabama State ahead 35-31 with 16:53 left in the game.
But Santa Barbara started the 16-4 run and took the lead 48-39 when Bray Skultety converted a three-point play on a layup and foul at 9:44.
Smith’s three-pointer cut it to 48-42 but Fullove scored four points on another 6-0 run for the Gauchos and the Hornets could pull no closer than 10 points after that.
Fullove made 8-of-12 shots from the field and 5-of-6 free throws. Claborn had a game-high eight rebounds for Alabama State.
