LAIE, Hawaii (AP)—Eric Walton scored 14 points to lead San Jose State over Northern Illinois 53-41 Friday in opening day action at the Surf N’ Slam-Hawaii Tournament.
After trading baskets to open the game, Brett Lilly hit a 3-pointer to give San Jose State a lead it would never relinquish.
The Spartans (4-3) held a six-point lead at halftime, 26-20. They led by as many as 12 points with a little more than nine minutes left in the game and again at the buzzer.
Lilly ended the game with nine points, while teammate Kareem Guilbeaux had six assists.
Mike McKinney led Northern Illinois (4-4) with nine points. Teammate Marcus Smallwood added eight points and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.
The round-robin tournament was set to continue Saturday with Northern Illinois playing host Brigham Young University-Hawaii and San Jose State going up against Baylor.
