KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP)—Blake Ahearn scored 19 points—including two free throws with 8 seconds remaining in the second overtime—to give Southwest Missouri State an 80-77 victory over Missouri-Kansas City Wednesday night.
Eric Smith, who was in the game only because four Bears had fouled out, converted a rebound to give the Bears a 78-77 lead with 26 seconds left. The Kangaroos (3-5) turned the ball over on their next possession, and Ahearn hit the two free throws to secure the win.
Missouri-Kansas City’s Mike English, who had a career-high 22 points, missed a 3-pointer with 2 seconds left.
The Bears (6-4) led 35-23 at halftime and was ahead 48-32 with 11:28 left when Missouri-Kansas City rallied and tied the game on a 3-pointer by Michael Watson with 5 seconds left in regulation. Watson finished with 29 points.
In the first overtime, the Kangaroos got the ball with 25 seconds left and the game tied at 69-69 but Watson missed a shot with 5 seconds left.
Southwest Missouri’s Shelton Colwell scored 17 points, with Monwell Randle adding 12 and Tommy Johnson 11.
Brandon Temple had 13 points and Brandon Lipsey added 10 for Missouri-Kansas City, which hit just 19-of-35 from the free throw line. The Bears were 16-of-24 from the line.
