SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP)—Michael McFadden scored 11 of his season-high 17 points in overtime as San Jose State defeated Sacramento State 85-77 on Saturday.
Eric Walton scored a career-high 27 points as the Spartans (3-3) won their second straight by beating the Hornets for the 18th time in 20 games.
Jameel Pugh and Brandon Guyton each scored 14 points for Sacramento State (3-5), which lost its fourth straight.
San Jose State’s Marquin Chandler hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to force overtime after Sacramento State erased an 18-point second-half deficit.
San Jose State scored the first four points of the second half to take its biggest lead at 39-21, but the Hornets then launched their comeback.
Joel Jones, who scored 10 points, made three free throws with 9:29 remaining to play, helping to spark the rally. The Hornets went on an 18-2 run shortly afterward, with Tony Champion’s inside jumper giving them the lead at 61-59 with 1:46 remaining.
Joseth Dawson, who had 13 points, hit a pair of free throws with six seconds left to give Sacramento State a 67-64 edge and set up Chandler’s heroics.
The Hornets hurt themselves with another poor shooting effort, making just six of 27 attempts from the field in the early going. In its past three games, Sacramento State is shooting less than 20 percent in the first 10 minutes of the game.
Phil Calvert’s 3-pointer sparked a 12-2 run as the Spartans took a 22-12 lead midway through the first half en route to a 35-21 halftime advantage.
