NORFOLK, Va. (AP)—Chakowby Hicks gave Norfolk State the lead on a 3-pointer with 1:05 to play and Towson went the final 1:26 without a point Saturday as the Spartans rallied for their first victory of the season, 54-50.
Hicks’ basket stopped a 5-0 run for the Tigers (2-3), and Derrick Smith produced the final margin by making a field goal with :08 remaining.
The Tigers had erased a 49-45 deficit in the final six minutes by holding Norfolk State scoreless for 4 1/2 minutes, finally taking its lead on two free throws by Jamaal Gilchrist. Hicks’ 3-pointer ended the run, and Smith’s basket sealed it.
Winstonn Tubbs led the Tigers with 11 points and Trevan Jackson had 10 in a game where Towson shot just 32.7 percent and the Spartans shot just 30.2 percent.
