La Salle 79, James Madison 71
PHILADELPHIA (AP)—Steve Smith scored a career-high 27 points and grabbed 13 rebounds as La Salle snapped its winless streak with a 79-71 victory over James Madison on Wednesday.
Gary Neal added 19 points for La Salle (1-4), while Dwayne Broyles had 20 points and Daniel Freeman had 15 for James Madison (2-2).
La Salle scored the first 14 points of the game and led by as many as 17 points in the first half before the Dukes closed to 42-33 at halftime.
The Explorers took a 61-56 lead on a 3-pointer by Neal with 9:56 to play, but James Madison ran off nine straight points and took its biggest lead, 65-61, on a three-point shot by Broyles at the 5:22 mark.
La Salle then scored 10 straight points, and a three-point play by Smith with 3:41 to play gave the Explorers gave a 71-65 advantage.
A jumper by Chris Williams cut the lead to 71-69, but Smith’s trey with 1:37 to go gave the Explorers 74-69 lead.
