AUSTIN, Texas (AP)—P.J. Tucker scored 15 points and James Thomas added 13 in No. 11 Texas’ 94-59 victory over Centenary on Saturday night.
Texas (3-0) led 42-33 at the half, and Thomas scored six straight points to open the second half and start a 25-9 run.
The Longhorns’ narrow lead at halftime and shot selection didn’t sit well with coach Rick Barnes.
“I thought we settled early,” he said. “We took some bad shots early and allowed them to get some easy run-outs.”
Rickey Evans led Centenary (1-2) with 17 points, but no other player scored in double figures. Centenary shot just 34 percent in the second half (11-of-32).
“I just don’t think we came out focused early, myself included,” Thomas said. “We changed that.”
Brandon Mouton recovered from a 1-for-7 start to finish with 10 points for the Longhorns. Royal Ivey added 10 points, including two 3-pointers, and had five of Texas’ 11 steals.
“I don’t think the team that played in the first half was a typical Texas team,” he said.
Brad Buckman finished with nine points and nine rebounds for Texas, which outrebounded Centenary 44-34.
“Texas is just good,” Centenary coach Kevin Johnson said. “They broke through what we tried to do.”
The Longhorns were 13-of-22 from the free-throw line. Centenary only made it to the line five times, but made four of the shots.
