S. Illinois 84, Jacksonville St. 49
CARBONDALE, Ill. (AP)—Brad Korn scored a career-high 17 points to lead Southern Illinois to a win over Jacksonville State 84-49 in its home opener Wednesday night.
Korn did most of his damage in the first half, making all five shots from the field, including a pair of 3-pointers.
“Brad is a lot more assertive,” head coach Matt Painter said of his 6-foot-9, senior forward. “He’s getting more opportunities and is making more of an effort to rebound the ball, mix it up in the paint, and tonight he just got in a great flow.”
Four Salukis joined Korn with double-figure scoring. Darren Brooks added 15 points and nine rebounds and Stetson Hairston chipped in 13.
Abdou Diame scored a team-high 10 points for the Gamecocks. Trent Eager added eight points and Anthony Wilson had six.
SIU’s defense held Jacksonville State to 34.5 percent shooting from the field, compared to 51.5 percent for the Salukis. It was SIU’s most lopsided win since beating Wichita State by 35 points last February.
