Birmingham-Southern 67, Alabama St. 57
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP)—Shema Mbyirukira scored 16 points and blocked six shots to lead Birmingham-Southern past Alabama State 67-57 Monday night.
Rostislav Vergun added 13 points and Derrick Williams had 11 for the Panthers (1-1).
Malcolm Campbell scored 17 points and Ralfeal Golden added 13 to lead Alabama State (1-1).
Birmingham-Southern had trailed by as many as 13 in the first half, but Vergun hit two 3-pointers and a baseline jumper to cut the Hornets’ lead to 32-29 with 58 seconds left in the first half.
The Hornets led 32-30 at the break, but Jakob Sigurdarson hit a 3 to give Birmingham-Southern a 35-34 lead. Campbell responded with one of his five 3-pointers, but Grant Davis hit a 3 on the Panthers’ next possession, and Birmingham-Southern never trailed again.
The Hornets stayed close, but the Panthers closed the game on a 13-4 run.
