Fairfield 64, St. John’s 59, OT
NEW YORK (AP)—Michael Bell scored 17 points and Rob Thomson added 16 to lead Fairfield to a 64-59 victory over St. John’s on Monday night.
Kyle Cuffe 16 points led the Red Storm (0-2), which had won the five previous meetings between the two schools.
Willie Shaw of St. John’s hit two free throws with 35.3 seconds to play to send the game into overtime tied at 53-all—but not before a disputed call as the buzzer sounded.
Referee Will Bush called a foul against St. John’s but was overruled by John Cahill, the lead official who said the foul came after the horn.
“We couldn’t tell if the horn or whistle came first,” Cahill explained. “There was no television monitor, so we ruled that the foul came after the horn.”
Deng Gai, who had 14 points for the Stags (2-0), opened the extra session with a 3-pointer. Cuffe then connected on a pair of 3’s to put St. John’s on top, 59-56, at 3:06.
Gai then his a jumper at 2:37 that ignited an 8-0 run that closed out the game with a jumper at 2:37.
Two foul shots by Terrence Todd put Fairfield on top for good, 60-59, at 1:46. Thomson and Bell each added two foul shots in the final 13.1 seconds to seal the win.
