Purdue 66, Samford 50
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP)—Kenneth Lowe scored 20 points to lead Purdue to a 66-50 win over Samford Sunday in the regular season opener for both teams.
Lowe keyed an 18-2 run to close the second half, then scored 11 straight points for the Boilermakers early in the second half to bury the Bulldogs.
Eddie Harper led Samford (0-1) with 16 points on 5-of-6 shooting and five rebounds.
The Boilermakers (1-0) struggled out of the gates against Samford, which is playing its first season in the Ohio Valley Conference.
The feisty Bulldogs used a 7-0 run to take an 11-6 lead early. But the Purdue defense stiffened, forcing 13 turnovers in the first half as the Boilermakers made their run.
Purdue closed the half with an 18-2 run, highlighted by six points and two steals from Lowe and a buzzer-beating 3-pointer by David Teague, to take a 37-23 lead at the break.
Samford tried to get back in the game early in the second half, hitting 3-pointers on three of four possessions. But Lowe had an answer for every score, hitting a jumper, a three-point play and two 3s to give Purdue a 52-32 lead with under 15 minutes to play.
Teague scored 10 points and Melvin Buckley had eight rebounds for Purdue.
Phillip Ramelli added 11 points and five rebounds for Samford.
The Bulldogs shot just 38 percent from the field and 28 percent (7-for-25) from 3-point range.
