CHARLOTTE AMALIE, U.S. Virgin Islands (AP)—Rob Kampman had 12 points and eight rounds and Wichita State held off La Salle 74-71 Friday night at the Paradise Jam.

Jermaine Thomas had a chance to tie it right before the buzzer, but shot an airball on a wide-open 3-pointer.

Fridge Holman added 12 points, Aaron Hogg had 11 and Jamar Howard 10 for the Shockers (1-0).

Gary Neal led La Salle (0-1) with 22 points. Mike Cleaves had 15 points and Steven Smith had 13 points and eight rebounds.

Down by eight, the Explorers used a 17-9 run midway through the second half to tie it at 50.
