Temple 99, Fordham 77
NEW YORK (AP)—Brian Polk scored 30 points and David Hawkins added 29, both career bests, and Temple had its highest point total in 15 years in a 99-77 victory over Fordham on Sunday.
The Owls (10-13, 7-5 Atlantic 10) became the sixth Division I program to reach 1,600 wins. Temple (1,600-871) joined Kentucky, North Carolina, Kansas, Duke and St. John’s at that milestone.
Polk and Hawkins each had six 3-pointers as the Owls shot a season-best 50 percent from 3-point range (16-for-32). Hawkins’ last 3 capped an 11-0 run and gave Temple its biggest lead of the game, 96-66 with 3:42 to play.
The last time the Owls went over the 100-point mark was Feb. 4, 1988, in a 110-70 victory over Duquesne.
John Blackgrove had 24 points for Fordham (2-22, 1-12), which lost its 12th straight and 22nd of 23 games. It was the second straight game the freshman had a career high. He had 22 points against St. Bonaventure last Wednesday.
It was Temple’s 17th straight win over the Rams and 19th in the last 20 meetings. The Owls, who beat the Rams 82-51 on Jan. 18, hold a 30-9 all-time record over Fordham, which last beat Temple in the 1980-81 season.
Fordham hit its first four shots of the game in taking an 11-8 lead, but the Owls took the lead for good at 12-11 on a layup by Hawkins with 15:17 left and they extended it to 45-30 at halftime.
Hawkins had two 3s and Polk added one in a 16-4 run that gave Temple a 61-37 lead with 14:41 to play. Hawkins was 6-for-8 on 3s, while Polk was 6-for-11.
Temple’s previous best effort from 3-point range was 48 percent (12-for-25) against St. Bonaventure on Feb. 1.
Hawkins, a senior, had his previous career high of 28 against George Washington last season, while Polk, a junior, had his best of 25 last season against Rhode Island.
