NEW ORLEANS (AP)—Trailing by one in the final seconds, Tulane tried to put the ball in the hands of Waitari Marsh, but the Memphis defense held on for a 58-57 victory in Conference USA action Thursday evening.

John Grice knocked down back-to-back three-pointers to give Memphis (15-5, 6-3 Conference USA) a 58-56 lead with 2:19 remaining and Tulane’s Brandon Spann hit the first of two free throws to pull the Wave within one at 58-57 with a minute to go.

After Spann missed the second basket, Quincy Davis grabbed the rebound for Tulane (11-11, 4-5 Conference USA), but could not score. Brandon Brown also grabbed an offensive rebound, but he was off the mark as well.

Memphis missed a pair on its own end, however, and the Wave had the ball with 12 seconds remaining. Marsh tried to drive to the hoop, but had the ball knocked out of bounds.

On the in-bounds play, Wayne Tinsley tried to find Marsh with a lob, but that was deflected as well, setting up one final chance with two seconds remaining. Following a timeout, the Wave tried to find Marsh once again, and once again, Memphis knocked it clear to hold on for the victory.

Chris Massie led Memphis with 16 points, while Rodney Carney added 10.

Marsh led the Tulane with 20 points and Spann added 10.
