Fairfield 70, Manhattan 68

NEW YORK (AP)—Deng Gai scored 14 points and Kudjo Sogadzi added 13 as Fairfield beat Manhattan 70-68 Thursday night, snapping the Jaspers’ Division I-leading 15-game winning streak.

Luis Flores, who had 20 of his 27 points in the second half, missed a 20-footer at the buzzer for the Jaspers (19-4, 12-2 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference).

Flores got the ball on a rebound after Kenny Minor missed a 15-footer to tie the game with 3.9 seconds left, but his would-be game-winner bounced off the rim.

The visiting Stags (14-8, 10-3) trailed by as many as eight points in the first half and were down 28-27 at halftime. They made 31 of 40 free throws while Manhattan converted 21-of-27.

The Jaspers’ last loss was 74-72 to MAAC rival St. Peter’s on Dec. 21.

Fairfield led 49-40 after Gai scored with 10:47 left to play. Flores made consecutive baskets and then hit two free throws to cap a 14-4 run, giving the Jaspers a 54-53 lead with 7:27 left.

After two more lead changes, Oscar Garcia’s three-point play put Fairfield ahead to stay 58-56 with 6:01 to go. Flores converted three free throws and then scored a basket to narrow the Stags’ six-point lead to 69-68 with 28 seconds remaining.

Terrence Todd’s free throw with 13 seconds left ended the scoring.

Jared Johnson added 13 points and Mike Konovelchick 11 for Manhattan. Nick Delfico had 11 points for Fairfield.
