Fairfield 72, Canisius 68
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP)—Kudjo Sogadzi scored 18 points to lead Fairfield past Canisius 72-68 in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game Thursday night.
Sogadzi scored 14 of the final 17 points for the Stags (13-7, 9-2 MAAC), who beat Canisius for the seventh-straight time. Sogadzi sealed the victory by making two free throws with two seconds remaining.
Canisius (8-13, 4-8) received 16 points from Kevin Downey and 15 apiece from Jon Ferris and Yaku Moton-Spruill. The Golden Griffs were limited to 37.1-percent shooting from the floor.
The Stags trailed 47-42 with 13:10 remaining in the game before holding Canisius to one basket over the ensuing 6 1/2 minutes.
Fairfield opened a 61-54 lead on Sogadzi’s 3-pointer that just beat the shot clock with 5:01 remaining.
Oscar Garcia scored 17 points for Fairfield and Deng Gai added 11 points and nine rebounds.
The Stags established a 32-29 halftime lead after holding Canisius to 35.3-percent shooting.
Neither team led by more than six points in the first half.
With the victory, the Stags were assured of a second-straight, non-losing season in the MAAC, a first in the school’s history. Last season, Fairfield went 9-9 in MAAC play.
