Siena 74, Fairfield 71
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP)—Tommy Mitchell scored 22 points to lead Siena past Fairfield 74-71 in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game Thursday.
Siena (13-6, 7-3 MAAC) grabbed 18 offensive rebounds, including 14 in the second half, in winning its third straight.
Fairfield (12-7, 8-2) was led by freshman Terrence Todd’s 18 points, which included 11 in the final 3 1/2 minutes. Todd’s 3-pointer with 4.6 seconds remaining pulled the Stags within 72-71 before Prosper Karangwa nailed two free throws.
Deng Gai’s desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer fell short.
Siena was 25-of-29 from the foul line. The Saints made 16 straight free throws after Michael Haddix missed the team’s first attempt.
Haddix finished with 13 points and eight rebounds, and Karangwa had 11 points and seven assists.
Siena surged to a 23-9 lead to open the game, but the Stags recouped and clawed to within 31-29 at halftime. Siena didn’t hit a field goal in the final 10:26 of the first half, scoring six point on foul shots.
In that span, Siena scored six points on foul shots.
Oscar Garcia finished with 12 points and seven rebounds for the Stags, who committed 22 turnovers.
