PENN 79, LA SALLE 66
PHILADELPHIA (AP)—Ugonna Onyekwe scored 22 points and Jeff Schiffner hit three 3-point shots during a second-half Penn surge as the Quakers defeated local rival La Salle 79-66 Tuesday.
Andrew Toole had 16 points and Schiffner 15 for Penn (8-5) while Jermaine Thomas had 23 and Steve Smith 14 for the Explorers (8-9), who lost their eighth straight to the Quakers.
After Smith’s 3-pointer gave La Salle a 39-38 lead with 14:29 to play, Schiffner hit a 3-point shot, igniting a 14-0 run, capped by another 3 by Koko Archibong.
La Salle then closed to 53-45 at the 10:09 mark but two straight from beyond the arc by Schiffner boosted the Penn lead to 59-45 and La Salle never got closer than 11 points.
Penn held leads of 18-5 and 27-15 in the first half, but the Explorers closed the gap to 27-21 at halftime as both teams had shooting problems. Penn was 8-for-24 in the half and La Salle 7-for-24 and each committed 11 turnovers.
