Manhattan 93, Fairfield 86
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP)—Luis Flores scored a career-high 44 points, two short of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference record, to lead Manhattan past Fairfield 93-86 Thursday night.
The Jaspers (14-3, 8-1 MAAC) won their 10th straight and took over first place from Fairfield (11-6, 7-1) in the conference.
The Stags had a six-game winning streak, their longest in 17 years, snapped.
Flores’ basket and foul shot with 2:10 remaining gave Manhattan an 87-82 lead. Dave Holmes all but sealed it with a layup a minute later that extended the Jaspers lead to 89-82.
Deng Gai led Fairfield with 17 points and five blocks. Oscar Garcia scored 17 points and DeWitt Maxwell added 15 points.
Fairfield, which trailed by as many as 11 points in the second half, pulled within 83-82 on Terrence Todds two foul shots with 3:47 remaining, but never took the lead.
The teams both shot 66 percent from the floor in the first half and went to the locker room with the score tied 51-51.
Flores scored 26 of his points before halftime.
Overall, Flores was 13-of-18 from the field and 16-of-18 from the foul line. The MAAC record for points in a conference game was established by Holy Cross’s Jim McCaffrey, who scored 46 points against Iona on Jan. 31, 1985.
Flores had 38 points in a game against Niagara two weeks ago.
Jared Johnson scored 20 points for the Jaspers and Holmes added 11.
The teams combined for 56 fouls.
