Lake Charles, La. (AP)—Robert Shannon hit seven 3-pointers to lead Sam Houston State to a 85-78 victory over McNeese State Monday.

Shannon went 7-of-13 from the 3-point mark, 7-of-14 from the field and 7-of-9 from the line to get 28 points.

Donald Cole also had a big game for Sam Houston (5-3, 2-0) with 27 points. He was 8-of-15 from the field and 10-of-12 from the line. He picked up one 3-pointer.

Adrian Johnson led McNeese (5-4, 1-1) with 16 points. Jerrick Oliver had 14 points and Jason Coleman added 12. Eldridge Lewis had 11 points and 10 assists.

Sam Houston led 43-39 at the break on 46 percent shooting from the field and 45 percent shooting from the 3-point range.

McNeese made 24-of-49 shots from the field, or 49 percent. Sam Houston hit 43 percent of its shots from the field, or 24-of-56. But McNeese turned the ball over 22 times to Sam Houston’s 15.

In rebounds, McNeese led 35-29 with Johnson pulling in six balls.

In the second, Sam Houston went to the line 26 times to get 22 points.
